A shell lies upon the shore, pale beneath the sun. From a distance its inner curve flashes like a piece of silver, and desire moves toward what has never been there. Across the heated plain, light trembles into the appearance of water. The thirsty eye sees a pool where dry earth continues unbroken.
These appearances have no truth in past, present, or future, yet the one caught within them cannot dismiss them merely by command. The gleam persuades, the mirage recedes, and effort continues until clearer seeing arises.
Shiva offers these quiet images to show the force of Maya. What is false can still govern experience. Freedom requires the grace by which appearance is known as appearance and the underlying reality stands revealed.
The shell keeps no silver, the sunlight holds no pool, and still the unawakened eye runs toward both.
