Saar (Essence)

Ananta points to the unchanging awareness that serves as the substratum for all states, remaining completely untouched whether attention is focused on phenomenal content or resting in the emptiness of deep sleep.

Awareness remains unchanging whether there is attention on something or not.
You are the substratum that remains untouched by whether attention is on a thorn or nothing at all.
This awareness is not coming and going with the perception of something.

Ananta

So that is attention. Now, what is attention reporting back to? Who is attention bringing this content to? The attention is reporting to awareness. Awareness knows that, and then somehow consciousness picks it up and does something related. Actually, here is where the lines between itself, which is consciousness, and the 'to which' we call awareness start to fade away.

Ananta

You see, you can tell that that which is aware of even attention and the content of attention, that remains unchanging whether there is attention on something or not. So if 'seeing' means this process of watching, perceiving, using attention, then there is a bigger Seeing with a capital S which is aware of this, which remains untouched, unchanged, whether there is content which is seen or there is no content. Whether it is the waking state in which all this play of phenomenality is happening, or the sleep state in which there is nothing, you are that which is the substratum of all of these things and yet remain completely untouched by whether attention is on a form or whether there is nothing to perceive. This awareness is not coming and going with the perception of something.
