How Can Attention Check for That Which Has No Attributes? - 11th October 2016
Saar (Essence)
Ananta guides the seeker to recognize that the non-phenomenal Self exists beyond the reach of attention and measurement, revealing that even labels like 'awareness' or 'untouched' are merely phenomenal pointers to the attributeless reality.
Attention is a tool to measure the phenomenal, but it has no role in the discovery of awareness.
You are not in this universe; this universe is just an appearance within you.
The concept of being touched cannot apply to that which is non-phenomenal.

So Father, like anything which you can say is finite or infinite or measurable, it has to be the other end of the attention getting. So only then you can say it is finite, infinite, or measurable. So when I check about awareness—'Am I aware now?'—attention just goes to its source, like both ends merge. So it doesn't stay as attention when the recognition is there. So you cannot say even the awareness is infinite or something because you don't know, because attention itself goes back to... so it might be a black hole which might have potential to create infiniteness, but it itself can be finite or infinite?
Right, yes. So that is why it is important to see that attention tells you about the—brings that which is phenomenal to life. Using attention... Maya means also 'to be able to measure,' is it? So using our attention we can get the measure of things, we can fathom things, but that is only when it applies to the phenomenal realm. Attention is a tool that works in accordance with our being to bring all of this phenomenal play into the appearance, into life for us. Now you yourself say that when I check 'Am I aware now?' I find that attention has no role to play. That's why the discovery that I must be making must be non-phenomenal.
Now what can we truly say about that which is non-phenomenal? Does it have a size, a shape? We cannot truly say anything, you see. But there might come a point where this insight seems true to you, which is that that which is phenomenal is just a coming and going, is it? It is just a coming and going, but this non-phenomenal is my eternal Self, you see. Now this cannot be pointed to accurately with any words, you see, but to point to it in this play we have to try and use some words, is it? So that awareness which you're checking now, if you were to label—if you had to pick a label which was whether it is transparent or opaque—what would you pick?
Transparent.
But can you really say that? Because even transparency and opaqueness you check with attention, isn't it? So the same way, when we are giving these kind of attributes to the attributeless one, we are making a pick in phenomenal terms, you see. If that... it sounds true but is not ultimately true. So also it is true for whether it is touched or untouched, because even to check whether it is touched or untouched you need attention to compare it, right? To see that that which is not in this realm at all, that is the discovery, isn't it?

There's this phenomenal realm of appearances and the awareness which I'm finding myself to be. When I used to say this earlier people used to get shocked because I say you are not in this universe at all; this universe is just appearance within you, you see. So if you are not in this universe at all because you're not phenomenal at all, and this is a phenomenal play, then between touched and untouched, what will you pick?
Untouched. Okay, but still it is a conclusion, right? Maybe the closest, but...
Yes, yes, because the concept of touching cannot apply.
Yes, exactly. That which is non-phenomenal, a phenomenal term like being touched does not apply.
Exactly, exactly. That's where I was like... confused. But terms are available only phenomenally, yes. Even the word awareness is not true for... even awareness is not true, yes. Very good.
